When Was the Serum Sodium Range Established?

The serum sodium range—those magical 135-145 mmol/L bounds we cling to as normal—didn’t pop out of thin air in a single “eureka” moment and was formalized in the early 20th century. The story starts with the dawn of clinical chemistry, when folks began measuring electrolytes in blood serum. Here’s the timeline, backed with receipts:

  • Early 1900s Foundations: The concept of measuring sodium in blood kicked off with the advent of flame photometry in the 1930s, but the groundwork was laid earlier. In 1919, Donald Van Slyke, a biochemistry titan, developed methods to analyze blood electrolytes, including sodium, using titration techniques. His 1923 paper in the Journal of Biological Chemistry (“Studies of Acidosis”) quotes: “The normal sodium content of plasma lies between 130 and 150 milliequivalents per liter,” giving us the first rough range.
  • 1930s Refinement with Flame Photometry: The game changer came with Robert Bowden Barnes’ invention of flame photometry in 1933, which let scientists measure sodium ions precisely in serum.
